Sound Check at Momos

An extract from the Times, about our programme SoundCheck at Momos - which is currently broadcasting in the UK on the Africa Channel at 9.30pm every night...

"The Congolese rumba collective Kékélé are the first guests to grace this relaxed, atmospheric eight-part series, their distinctive, acoustic guitar-led sound proving the perfect introduction to a slot that seeks to showcase the best in modern African music. Their performance is interspersed with snippets of the troupe discussing Congolese folklore, politics and the origins of rumba."

Free Seminar set to challenge pre-conceptions about Second Life

Phoenix Film & Television (http://www.phoenixmedia.co.uk/) have announced the date of their next Free Second Life Seminar, to be held on Thursday 10th April at the Washington Mayfair Hotel, London. This interactive session will be focused upon exploring the possibilities offered by Virtual World technology for business, and will challenge head on the recent negative press that Second Life has been receiving in various sections of the media.

Phoenix Film & Television are a leading Second Life service provider, with clients including Universal Music, Macmillan Cancer Support and Cannongate Publishers, and have carried out extensive research into the perception and current attitudes held by key decision makers about the potential relevance of Virtual World technology for business. In this free session the findings of this research will be presented, and it will be asserted that the recent high profile failiures of a number of Second Life business ventures has been due to an acute lack of understanding of the platform. Phoenix will be proposing a new use for Virtual World technology as a business communications platform as opposed to direct money making enterprise, demonstrating the potential far reaching benefits of embracing Second Life beyond the initial and common mistake of thinking that it is a new channel for direct sales.

Lawrence Francis, Head of International Sales at Phoenix Film & Television said: “Perception of Second Life is at an all time low at the moment, it seems the bubble has burst, but in reality this is simply the inevitable backlash from 3 years of Second Life being misunderstood and mis-sold. It is only in rare occasions that Second Life can be a direct money making medium, and nor is a presence in Second Life worthwhile as a one off PR stunt, but what we will demonstrate is that it is a serious business tool that offers business users a whole range of communication technology which might otherwise be far out of budget. This seminar will pose some difficult questions and reposition Second Life as a platform for international business, not just a gimmick or game...”

Tinariwen Live

The Africa Channel (Sky channel 281) in association with record label Independiente have commissioned London based indie Phoenix Film & Television (http://www.phoenixmedia.co.uk/ ) to produce a brand new full length live concert and documentary focusing upon the music and story of freedom fighters turned rock stars “Tinariwen”. The Malian collective, formed in the camps of Tuareg rebels in West Africa are fast becoming one of the world’s most talked about alternative acts, and this film showing their distinctive style and incredible story is another example of The Africa Channel using their scheduling to bring inspiring and unique content to a UK audience.

The sold out concert, filmed live at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire in December 07, will also be released as a stand-alone DVD later in the year, and is expected to repeat the success of the album “Aman Iman” which brought the band to the attention of the world’s media.

Phoenix Film & Television, one of the UK’s leading music indie producers, were also commissioned to send a documentary crew “on-the-road” with the band during their recent European tour, documenting the incredible ascent of the band from exiled refugees to international rock stars. This uncompromising film will give an unparalleled insight into the mindset of these artists, furthering The Africa Channel’s remit to bring serious and quality programming from the continent to a UK audience.

Lawrence Francis, Head of Concept Development at Phoenix says: “This film will give viewers the chance to see the true story of this incredible bunch of people, not only educating about the troubles in West Africa, but showing how human spirit and music really can make a tangible political difference.”

Christopher Walsh, Head of Music for The Africa Channel UK also adds “Tinariwen are one of the most important artists in the world today, and by committing to placing African talent like this at the heart of our schedule we are continuing to show that the continent is alive and kicking with creativity that gets little or no coverage anywhere else on UK Television”.

Phoenix Film & Television on the Hunt for the TV Talent of the Future

Award winning independent television production company Phoenix Film & Television are proud to announce that they are launching a nationwide search for the best new Television talent in the UK. Phoenix are inviting anyone with scripts, ideas, concepts or treatments to email ideas@phoenixmedia.co.uk, with a view to the best submissions being produced and broadcast in 2008-2009.

Phoenix have well established relationships with broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4, Virgin, Sky and The Africa Channel, and motivated by the lack of exciting new ideas on UK television have begun a search for the television stars of the future. Sales and Marketing Manager Lawrence Francis says: “Television in the multi-channel age is becoming more and more predictable, with the new e-commissioning systems making it even harder than ever for new writers or producers to achieve any success. Phoenix are keen to see UK television reestablish itself as the most innovative in the world, and are therefore keen to hear from anyone who has an idea that they think could be the next TV hit”.

Ideas for all genres are welcome, and Phoenix will be keen to arrange pre-production meetings to discuss the best received. The Phoenix creative development team will respond to all submissions which state the genre in the subject, and look forward to unearthing the next big thing.

Submissions are welcomed for the following genres:
- Comedy
- Music
- Entertainment
- Documentary
- Reality
- Drama
