Phoenix commissioned to produce World Music Show for the Africa Channel

The Africa Channel (Sky channel 281) have commissioned London based indie Phoenix Film & Television (http://www.phoenixmedia.co.uk/ ) to produce a brand new flagship world music series to further boost the channels launch in the UK. The show, provisionally titled “Sound Check at Momos”, will feature intimate gigs with some of the biggest names in world music, bringing many of these best selling global artists to the attention of UK viewers for the first time. The series will be shot on location at the exclusive Momos members club in London’s west end, focusing on a different artist each week. Combining live footage with interviews and profiles, each episode will provide a comprehensive introduction to the artist, in addition to providing a wider cultural context for their musical style and heritage. Artists to be featured in the first series include: Orchestra Baobab, Kekele and Souad Massi.

Through commissioning this concept from Phoenix, one of the UK’s leading producers of music related programming, The Africa Channel have demonstrated their commitment to establishing themselves as more than a specialist channel but as a major broadcaster in the UK, with a wide spectrum of programming to appeal to UK viewers. This project also demonstrates the channels commitment to delivering original programming that will educate and entertain, offering a unique service in the already crowded multi-channel market.

Lawrence Francis, Head of Sales at Phoenix says: “Sound check at Momos will give viewers the chance to enjoy a wide range of fantastic artists that otherwise would never get exposure on British TV. The show offers a fresh perspective on the “live music” format, and we are really excited about our relationship with this forward thinking channel.”

Chris Walsh from The Africa Channel adds: “We knew that we wanted to feature world music as a major part of our UK output, and having been impressed by the work of Phoenix in the past we could immediately see that the Sound Check at Momos concept would give us the combination of high-quality and intimacy that we required.”
